Titled: ‘Improvised Architectural Responses to the Changing Climate; Making, Sharing and Communicating Design Processes in Rural Bangladesh.’ Bangladesh is particularly vulnerable to global climate change, with weather-driven calamities disproportionately affecting low-income rural communities. Research findings highlight the unequal distribution of responsibilities and the greater burden on women in the community to respond to the threats of extreme climate. This research methodology l seeks to empower those in Bangladeshi villages by enabling marginalised voices to be heard through an emphasis on collective engagement, especially incorporating the contributions by female residents. We hosted a number of workshops with local craftsmen to re-introduce traditional methods of building with rammed earth and bamboo. We have demonstrated ways to build a rammed earth and to treat bamboo to give the locals confidence in the local materials which are see as "low material". All the bamboo used for this building is from local gardens leading to zero carbon footprint. The roofing comprised a layer of insulation with profile metal sheeting fixed onto the bamboo trusses. Our Trustee Dr. Nilufar Fatema leads the health camps. Although the health camps were very popular with the village women, amongst the patients were men, women and children of various ages. These health camps attract high volume of women as they are willing to confide in a female doctor that they trust and have known for a few years. Running the camps have been a huge success, with a large number of patients seen during the course of one health camp. We are delighted to have our youngest volunteer in the health camp Sharar Chowdhury, who volunteered his time to assist the doctor during the busy health camp. The villagers expressed their gratitude for these free services which are always very much appreciated. Amongst the patients the doctor has treated mostly women and the children, however some of the patients were men. The village representatives and elders attended the ceremony where they took part in the speeches. The village elders have all expressed their gratitude towards the late Professor Mannan's life long contribution for the villagers and they expressed their appreciation towards the Mannan family's continued dedication to serve the disadvantaged rural population of Rajapur and the surrounding villages. MFT Trustees present were Mrs. Razia Begum Mannan, Ms Tumpa Husna Yasmin Fellows and Dr. Nilufar Faterma as well as MFT's supporter Mr. David Fellows. Titled: ‘Improvised Architectural Responses to the Changing Climate; Making, Sharing and Communicating Design Processes in Rural Bangladesh.’ Bangladesh is particularly vulnerable to global climate change, with weather-driven calamities disproportionately affecting low-income rural communities. Research findings highlight the unequal distribution of responsibilities and the greater burden on women in the community to respond to the threats of extreme climate. This research methodology l seeks to empower those in Bangladeshi villages by enabling marginalised voices to be heard through an emphasis on collective engagement, especially incorporating the contributions by female residents.
